STOP tile

Post by Lady Saavik »

Some of you may know - I'm making a map with Soreu. It won't be standard DDRace map, rather something special.
That's why deen made BONUS tile (opposite of PENALTY) for me - it will be very useful.

But while making the map and thinking about possible not wanted situations we realized, that we need another new tile. It would just stop your time only when you're touching it (so we don't need START tile).

I know, you can say you don't care about my map, why should I get something I want, this feature will be used only in one map etc. That's why we have a few more ideas for that:
- there is a map under construction, creators could make rooms where you can think about how to make the complicated part, without losing time
- chill/afk rooms in long maps just to make pause and go make a tea
- training rooms, for example on novice map, where you can try the trick before making the part
- other creative maps

If many people are against it, we have to think about other solution :(

I'm not sure if the pause rooms are really in DDNet spirit, as it always seemed to be independent from the chillout quality - people, who are able to leave their computer running til the morning, will have an advantage of getting some sleep before finishing a very hard map with good time. But on the other hand it's sometimes really brutal, when a long map doesn't allow you to save if you're not playing in team - and this feature would stop the people who don't like to play in crowd from having this advantage exclusively.
EDIT: After reconsidering it, it may be a bad idea, because of this.

But anyway - I think the more tiles we have, the better DDNet becomes. I think that somebody will find even more creative uses for it, so I support you entirely.

There is a feature currently in ddnet that allows you to do this already. Don't know if you have heard about it yet. Its called /save and /load.

Ama - i already know about 4 maps on which mappers want to use it (mostly for chill and training), so it's not really like nobody will use it - there are also many other things which mappers don't use and which could give them many new possibilities (90% of tunes for example)

ok we were thinking a bit more about it
and spamming whole room with this tile would be stupid, so if you have nothing against it, I would prefer both - STOP and RESUME tiles.
It will be only in relatively empty Switch layer (I guess?), so it shouldn't get too messy.

Or you could implement it in a way that first touch means stop and snd touch means resume?

Thats senseless. You are always forced to let the tees just one time through the STOP tile (stoppers, teles, ..etc). If not its possible to cheat the time.

I guess the best way is a tune zone code to stop the time.

If you use them for chill rooms it doesn't matter how often they go through it, so you don't need to force anyone to do anything. Entering chill room -> time stops, leaving chill room -> time resumes.
kamillentee wrote:If not its possible to cheat the time.
So or so it's cheatable. If it works for whole team - for example - then one can stop time while the other ones are doing the part and such stuff.

It depends on how you wanna use that feature. I can imagine different possibilitys wich needs different implementations.

Yeah, maybe with tune zones you could do it in a way, that mapper can choose how exactly the feature works. But then you could also place it on switch layer and change with numbers value wich function you want to have.
