Re: No more Tournaments
This sucks. This was the first tournament I had the chance to participate (well, not for the win, but just to be there) and I was soooo looking forward to play another one.

Actually I'm not sure what happened. There wasn't all that much traffic, but the server went totally unresponsive.FakeDeath wrote:DoS means Denial of Service, but how? Do they connect, disconnect and reconnect over and over? Or pinging the server countless times? If it's disconnecting and reconnection, you can fix that, right?

Re: No more Tournaments
At first we have to know the basics about a server. So How does it works? well, if you want to connect with a server, your computer sends a "request" to the server and asks to join the server. A DoS is when a computer sends very much "requests" in less time. So the server can't handle this high bandwith and just shut down and answer with "Timeout Error". To fix it you just have to know the attacking ip and ban it. There is another type of Dos.. It's called "DDoS" which means Distributed Denial of Service. In a DDoS there are many computers that trying to overstress the server till its shut down. Ofcourse you need many computers to start a DDoS. So what does this means ? Right, more computers, more ip's. But the computers aren't the attackers owns. The attacker sends a virus with a botnet in it. You can control the computers with a botnet then. First advantage is, if you have more computers the bandwith is bigger and its easier to overstress a server. Secondly it isn't that easy to stop a DDoS. But to be real.. I think it was a DoS attack cause' i don't think someone gives such an efford to shut down a teeworlds server with a DDoS.

Mio: This time it was a low traffic attack, but I couldn't find out how it worked. The traffic was only about 100 - 200 Mbit/s from what I could see.
Re: No more Tournaments
so i guess it was a failed attack ?

Re: No more Tournaments
No, it was quite successful... Just not the usual brute force approach.

Re: No more Tournaments
Sounds like someone wants to disturb the tournaments. But just disturb it. And not kill it?
