I personally feel like they are less people now than 1 year ago.

It's because many "famous" players left.
But amount of newcomers increased.

According to the statistics I don't see a big difference from 2015 to 2016

If staff didn't decrease and the amount of members didn't increase then there isn't a real change. The only thing that changed might be the number of people joining the forums with their maps and questions about different stuff.

Why not still join as an admin? Perhaps you could contribute whenever you want on your spare time. I also agree that the DDNet client is the best client (I don't play DD) and the fact that DD had several updates while official/vanilla client only had one, doesn't that speak volumes about how much the DDNet team needs you, because DD is the only one with a potential future?

I'm sure anyone would want to convince you, but no fret, it's your time and effort.

Good to see version numbers going up at least. I think this at least shows that DD has a future, at least in foreseeable time.

What should we expect for 9.3 or 10?
