Wouldn't say anything different.

I talked with jao and he told me many important details which aren't written here, but give the whole thing a completely different look. Dunno why they aren't shared here.

I still don't get the purpose of it, since all people who are interested in testing are already helping and giving their opinion. The difference is just that now some people's opinion count more, officially and that suddenly people who didn't care about testing apply to this group, because they are special then and not because they are interested in it.

I believe it's not necessary to have mapping/testing skills to tell whether a map would be fun to play/brings something new or not. In fact, it happend to me that maps seemed to have qualities that would make it popular, but in the end they turned out to be not good from a player standpoint at all. Obviously that can't be the only thing to look at, hence the group consists of people with mapping experience and people who are mostly players in that sense.

I think it's a bit rude to call the people I choose "randoms". They are all active parts of DDNet for a long time.

Normal user's opinions are still encouarged. As I said, I will make sure that everything goes in the right direction. If it happens that the public opinion and the group's decision are far off, that will definitely be considered.

Testers who are active and interested in taking part in release decisions are free to join the group (like Freezestyler, Kenzo and Oblique did). Also, the majority of what Testers did always was to make sure a map is bugless and well mapped. So if a Tester only was a Tester to decide about releases, they were not really the right person for the job :?

I will see how it works out. If certain server types lack competent people, I will try to hire more for those.

There were people who shared their opinion, however, in most cases they weren't valued that high. Often they were either too unexperienced or biased. Now that there is a group assigned, I hope to receive more honest and valuable opinions. With this change we are able to discuss properly about maps and understand the reasons behind opinions instead of relying on people just saying they like/dislike a map.

The only one who wasn't "special" or interested in testing before was asked to join by me. I don't think anyone joined for purely self-serving reasons :D

Before you founded that group there was already an active group of people who were testing on a regular base, giving their opinions about releases and so on. In addition with comments in the forum you made your decision. So what is different now, except that the composition of the new group is ridiculous?
The only real difference is that the group now is kinda closed and not open for spontaneous help. Or at least you didn't show a way for that.
And yep, people like meew' who want to decline maps, just because they are mad about other decisions are surely not for self-serving reasons in it.

Changes to Map Testing

Over the last few months, I have been hearing people’s feedback, reading reactions to map releases and having conversations with individual players. It seemed like large parts of the community were unhappy about the current Map Testing system therefore I have decided to change how we decide about releasing maps.

Instead of largely myself deciding, a group of trusted, experienced players that widely represent the playerbase will ensure predictions are more accurate and less biased, as fair as possible decisions are made. This group consist of:
  • Amu~Cookie
  • Freezestyler
  • jao
  • Kenzo
  • Kicker
  • meew'
  • Oblique.
  • Ryozuki
  • Shawn.
To make sure everything goes in the right direction and no absurd decisions are made, I will be overseeing the whole process. At the beginning I will also share my opinion and take part in discussions, however, I plan to step back from that later.

So how does it work?
Additionally to the normal testing done by our Testers, maps have to be approved by the above mentioned group. Each week ~3 maps will be handled which will be choosen based on the time they're waiting, their quality and how close they're to be "ready for release". Approved map's threads will be made sticky to maintain a good overview.
To not unnecessarily delay the process, Testers will continue to filter too low quality maps. Also, keep in mind that maps still need to comply with the Mapper Rules to be released.

I'm looking forward to push more changes in regard to Map Testing later. If you have questions on how the new system functions, feel free to ask in this thread.

Thank you for your feedback.
wtf jao I don't see myself in the list!

To give a little update: Kenzo and meew' have been removed from the group. They don't necessarily need to be replaced, but if you think you could fill in, feel free to apply to me (requirements remain the same as described here). Especially some help with Solo maps would be nice :)
