Tournaments? wasn't east making them?

i rly cant understand
There is no one to keep DDNet servers running, fixing them if something goes wrong, setting up new servers, etc. east didn't want to do any more tournaments, I don't have anyone else capable of doing these things.
So all your administrators / moderators are uncapable to do that? are they that uselesse? i don't think that..

They're useful for other tasks, but this is the main task I still have and they don't have Linux/system administration/development knowledge.

Ok maybe they can't "code" more for ddnet, but they can administrate it, or i think atleast, for what i saw, and maybe someday, we would fin someone with coding knowdaledge and keep ddnet updating, but not just abandon all this work just because you can't keep updating ddnet?

Just throwing out my 2c, but I could host servers from South Africa

I have this just sitting around:
50GB HDD
2GB RAM
1vCPU @ 2Ghz

would that be enough? I could try source something more powerful if it was required.

at the very least I could store the player data - it would be tragic to lose that!

@deen if you are just shutting down ddnet and arent putting in anything more, why not just give all the data for the site and servers to the Admins, and we can figure it out ourselves. If we successfully resetup ddnet, or fail, you don't lose anything either way.

Well, that's what I ideally want to do, but haven't found anyone suitable to give the data to. The current admins don't want to or can't do that.

Why not me then, (okay if you don't) I am a good organizer and we could just make a big admin group to help out, and all can do what they do best :D All these loving players don't want ddnet to just...

vanish. :o

Nothing against you BamBam but arent you something around 11? that should answer your question ..
Also now it kinda sounds really weird to me, if you are worried because of your trip, you could really give "us" the lead for the time you are gone, im pretty sure we can handle it even without tournaments no one will cry or do shit..
You see how many people just gathered here in not even a day lol
If you wanna work less with/for ddnet after the trip im sure that wont be that kind of a problem too, ddnet wasnt all just tournaments so i dont see any points in keeping tournaments running if no one is interested or willing to organize them well enough etc. Thats the smallest problem in my eyes.
The problem is, we cant replace you 100% right now and everyone knows it. So if you say you will stay around after your trip i dont see any problems to keep ddnet allive/up to be honest.

Please, don't shut the DDNet down.

Maybe they didn't understand how serious you were about it? Please, give them a chance and explain the basis of the DDNet administration - as long as they'll be able to maintain servers up and running and upload new maps, it'll be enough for now. We'll work on our next steps later.

I guess it would be better to keep servers running even without software and infrastructure updates. We're all really grateful aboout the vast amount of work you put in DDNet project and I doubt anybody will be able to do it as good without taking some time to learn, but I think it should be possible for somebody to keep it online. Given some time, people who know Linux programming enough will pop up (or the current admins will learn how to do this). After all, there were a lot of DDNet contributors, so I guess some of them would be able to learn the DDNet code base and start working on the updates again.

So, If the current administrators (or them and some new people) are capable of maintaining the current version online, please let them do so - even if we'll have some time without any updates, it's still sufficient for the most of us. And I'm sure we'll be happy to have this instead of a complete shutdown or creating a new project without ranks, this wonderful site, forum, &c. As you have said - creating something from nothingness, when we have such a wonderful code and player base, doesn't make any sense at all, so please help us this last time and allow us to gradually shift the responsibilities instead of building them again. I'm sure people will be happy with DDNet still working, even if the quality would be lower for some time, so please just give us some more time.

The shutdown of DDmaX was already a huge blow for the DDRace community, it would be horrible to see such a thing happen again. :c A lot of players had to rebuild their ranks (for example Themix, who had to redo most of DDmaX maps) and a lot of wonderful work just vanished. I don't think if I can help a lot, as I'm not really into Linux programming (I use Arch Linux, though, but I don't really know much about system architecture). But if I can be of any help as a programmer, feel free to PM me. Of course, I don't have a lot of time (and don't feel organised enough to help on regular basis) and therefore can't promise anything, but maybe I could help from time to time or explain the Linux basis to the new admins (if the problem is the lack of knowledge about how to use the Unix shell or the inability to do this).

Anyway, thank you for maintaining DDNet all this time and investing so much money and effort in it. We won't forget how wonderful community you've created. ^^
