Tutorial idea (with Steam release coming up)

We've had many discussions about finding a good way to introduce new players to the DDNet community.

I had another idea this morning:

We setup a server with only 1 map on it. This server is invisible in the serverlist (can't be found) but we add a button in the DDNet client that says "Tutorial". Like in any other game, somewhere in the menu you find a button that leads you to a tutorial. Pressing that button joins you to that tutorial server.

That button could be next to the "Demos"-button in the client.

The map should be easier than Seasons, like the Noobfilter of Basics.

What do you think?

Honestly, I think this could be great. You can even introduce the dummy (and his control-settings) for the 2p-tutorial.

And /team too. And maybe give him his first points for the tutorial map and after finish line, explain /points and /rank

Ai bots wich shows the new user how do basic things then he do it with a afk bot.

-Not easy to do i suppose but if "we" do that, no servers needed and more impresive for the user

i have so many ideas for a map....

the map should be parted in 3-4 (or more) big steps:

Step1(welcome): this should be a plain short text about how long the toutorial will take, what this exaxtly is. and so on....
at the end: "Press D to start toutorial"

Step2(client toutorial): here the map shows the player what you can do with the DDnet client, for example: Entities, sounds, /team and all those features.

Step3(actual gameplay toutorial):
1. Solo basics: i dont know what to write here, just some easy solo parts, gores, all weapons(with explainations)
2. 2 player basics: here he have to get his dummy and learn the functions (hammerfly and dummy change), first there is a room where the player can play around with dummy some hooking and swinging, then some easy parts like in Knight :3's "Seasons".

Step4(training): this should be a selection of parts which get harder and harder, i have found a map like this some years ago:(file is down below i think o.O)

Other: I would not like to have a start and finish line.
you may wonder how he gets his dummy whe he is in the middle of the map..... me too, maybe he can choose the steps at the start and restart the map 3 times dunno.
maybe someone can make soundfiles with explainations so the player dont have to read, like there is a "Help" edge i a part where you can go and someone gives a tipp there.

pls dont hate me this is just what came into my mind when i read this topic.

I like the idea hannibal. And i do like the suggestions by Im 'corneum. But I would take Step3 in front to the place of Step2. The explanations of ddnet client are rather unimportant in the first time and should me made in a extra area. Increasing skill level is a good Idea too

The noobfilter of Basics is quite hard. First because its a solo part and second you need to manage dj very well. Generally you should not use solo for a beginner tutorial. I really recommend to everyone of you to play a map with real beginners. Since you are all pros you dont know which parts are actually doable for nubs. I often see too hard suggestions.
Btw. Welf is very good in valuing the skills of beginners.

I also like the idea of sound in the map

I'm glad you like the idea. I suggest discussing specific content of a tutorial map later on. First, I'd love to know if it's possible to add an additional button in the client that leads to a separate server.

kamillentee, I actually imagined it solo. You wouldn't even see other players (idk how). It should pretty much feel like a "offline"-tutorial inside the client.

You could also create a separate server offline in the client instead of relaying on an offline server with limited slots and (possibly) high ping.
Additionally a tutorial gametype could be considered, which allows specific features(displaying text msg, pause/animate the camera, play audio samples on event, etc.). As it would be only usable with the ddnet client compatibility wouldn't be that much a limiting factor.. but just some random ideas^^

Fair enough, but bear in mind (intended) that the Steam release will happen in about a month. I'm an IT noob but your ideas sound like they'd need a lot of time and work.

This sounds great, i also though about a way to get new players. Is there a good video to promote teeworlds. then i can post the video at a video website for people in the age between 12-30. Maybe this way we get some new players. all video's get arround the 15.000 views a day. the audience of the website is especially game types i think.
sorry for my bad english, but it should be understandable.

someone should make gameplay videos of this called tutorial. just cut several "newbies" trying this together (all ways the scene where they made a part.
