grass_main graphics problems/solutions/questions!

As I was collecting mapres I stumbled upon a thing that bothered me.
The problem
When mapping with the standard grass_main tileset, it is not possible to change the color of a grass part (green, to another color like orange) without changing the brown color. When you change the color in editor you change it for the whole block, and you also have the influence of the green and brown when you change the colors in editor. That way it is impossible to be creative with the colors when mapping with grass_main. Changing the tones of your grass or earth (the brown color) can be an essential part of a nice looking map. Because of this mappers make their own mapres so there are now ton of mapres with different colored grass_main tilesets. There are also broken dreams of mappers who don't have the skill to create a selfcolored grass_main on their own and can't find one that supplies their needs.
The solution
I think this can be solved with 2 white/grey tilesets. One only containing the grass parts, the other one only containing the earth parts. A third mapres could be added for the bones but that's not essential at the moment. With these mapres everyone can create a good looking and colorful grass_main in editor by stacking the colored grass on top of the colored earth and changing the colors in editor. Another problem that is solved directly is the balance between the darker and lighter parts of the grass, if the white/grey tone is balanced nicely in the tilesets I am suggesting here, the light part (green in the normal grass_main) and the dark part (darker green in the normal grass_main) of the grass part will always be toned right when changing the color in editor. So there is nothing that holds a player from creating his or her own style when mapping. Also, it solves the problem of ~120 different colored grass_main files.
My question is, am I right? Does this really work? And if it does, can someone make the tilesets for me?
What are your opinions?
